Ustad Alladiya Khan
GHARANA
"A Pillar of Intellectual Depth and Classicism in Hindustani Music."

The Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana is one of the most distinguished and respected gharanas (musical lineages) in Hindustani classical music. It is particularly renowned for its rich, intricate, and intellectual style of khayal singing.
Origins & History
- The gharana was founded by Ustad Alladiya Khan (1855–1943), a legendary vocalist originally from Atrauli (in present-day Uttar Pradesh) who later settled in Jaipur, Rajasthan—thus the name Jaipur-Atrauli.
- Alladiya Khan was originally trained in the Dagar-bani dhrupad tradition, but he developed his own distinctive style of khayal singing.
- Due to a vocal health issue, he trained his nephews and disciples instead of performing widely himself.
Musical Style & Features
The Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana is known for:
- Layakari (Rhythmic complexity): Intricate use of rhythm, often with complex cross-rhythms and syncopations.
- Vilambit (slow tempo) development: A strong emphasis on slow, methodical raga elaboration.
- Jod and bol-baant: Creative interweaving of words (bol) and rhythmic structures.
- Rare Ragas: Many ragas performed by this gharana are rare or complex jod-ragas (combination ragas), such as Basant Kedar, Sampoorna Malkauns, Nat Kamod, etc.
- Emphasis on precision: Every note and phrase is carefully thought out and executed.
